Key points
- Hair loss has many possible causes: AGA in men, FAGA in women, alopecia areata, temporary shedding after childbirth or stress, thyroid disease and nutritional deficiencies, among others.
- Because the medications suitable for men and women differ, the first step is a physician’s examination to identify the cause.
- AFRODE CLINIC in Tokyo (Omotesando) offers oral and topical treatment, scalp injection treatment and nutritional support, with blood tests where needed.
- Self-pay care (not covered by Japanese public insurance). A 5-minute walk from Omotesando Station, Exit A2, by appointment only.
Not Just One Cause
Looking for hair loss treatment in Tokyo? At AFRODE CLINIC in Omotesando, thinning hair and hair loss can have more than one cause. Identifying the cause is the first step toward choosing the right treatment.
At AFRODE CLINIC in Omotesando, a physician examines you and checks the pattern and course of your hair loss before recommending treatment suited to you, whether you are a man or a woman.
This page sets out our overall approach to hair loss treatment and the options available. Men should also refer to our dedicated “AGA Treatment” page, and women to our dedicated “FAGA Treatment” page, for further detail.
Causes
Hair Loss Has More Than One Cause
There are various possible causes of thinning hair and hair loss. The most common include the following.
- AGA (androgenetic alopecia): progressive thinning at the hairline and crown, driven by male hormone activity
- FAGA (female androgenetic alopecia): diffuse thinning centred on the crown, seen in women
- Alopecia areata: hair loss with clearly defined borders, thought to involve the immune system
- Thyroid dysfunction: hair loss can increase when thyroid function is disrupted
- Undernutrition or iron deficiency: hair loss associated with extreme dieting or anaemia
- Telogen effluvium related to stress or lack of sleep: a temporary increase in shedding following severe stress or a change in physical condition
- Postpartum hair loss: temporary shedding related to hormonal changes after childbirth
* It is difficult to identify the cause from appearance alone; a physician needs to assess your condition at consultation.
These causes can also overlap. For example, we sometimes see cases where severe stress and undernutrition have occurred together, resulting in both telogen effluvium and AGA progressing at the same time. Rather than assuming “hair loss equals AGA,” we recommend discussing your current condition with a physician first.
Men & Women
What Differs Between Men and Women
AGA in men and FAGA in women differ not only in how they progress, but also in the medications available. Finasteride and dutasteride, the oral medications used for AGA, are indicated for men only, and cannot be used by women or minors (pregnant women must also avoid contact with broken tablets). For this reason, women’s hair loss is treated with a different combination of therapies.
The pattern of progression also tends to differ. AGA in men is more likely to show a receding hairline and thinning at the crown, whereas FAGA in women tends to cause diffuse thinning across the parting and crown, with hair thinning more evenly overall. That said, there is individual variation, and your actual condition needs to be confirmed at consultation.
For Men
Men’s Hair Loss (AGA)
For progressive thinning at the hairline and crown. We combine oral medication (finasteride / dutasteride) as the base treatment with scalp injection treatment.
For Women
Women’s Hair Loss (FAGA)
For diffuse thinning at the parting and crown. We propose a treatment plan combining oral, topical and injection treatment with nutritional support.
Why AFRODE CLINIC
Hair Loss Treatment in Omotesando — Why AFRODE CLINIC
A physician identifies the cause at consultation
Rather than judging by appearance alone, our physicians ask about the pattern and course of your hair loss and your medical history, and assess your condition — including the possibility of hair loss other than AGA or FAGA — before proposing a treatment plan.
A preventive-medicine perspective, beyond the scalp itself
As a preventive medicine clinic, we consider blood tests where needed, together with sleep, nutrition and lifestyle, and start by discussing with you whether treatment is even necessary.
Beyond oral medication, injection treatment is also an option
In addition to oral and topical treatment, we offer scalp injection of growth factors and scalp injection of stem cell supernatant, depending on your condition. We also offer stem cell supernatant IV therapy.
5 minutes from Omotesando Station, by appointment only
A 5-minute walk from Exit A2 of Omotesando Station on the Tokyo Metro. Treatment takes place in a private, appointment-only setting, so you can talk to us without concern for those around you. Hair loss treatment may be booked without a referral.
Consultation
What We Check During Consultation
- Medical interview: we ask when you first noticed hair loss or thinning and how it has progressed, your family history, past medical history, any medication you are currently taking, and lifestyle factors such as sleep and diet. For women, we also ask about pregnancy and menstrual history.
- Examination of the scalp and hair: the physician checks the extent and pattern of hair loss (hairline, crown, parting, and so on) and the condition of the scalp.
- Blood tests where needed: carried out when thyroid function, anaemia (iron levels) or another factor beyond the scalp is suspected, or when the physician judges a check is needed before starting oral medication.
- Explanation of treatment: we explain what can be expected from each treatment, the side effects and risks, the typical timeframe, and the cost, and begin treatment only once you are satisfied.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About Hair Loss Treatment
Q1. How can I tell whether my hair loss is AGA or FAGA?
It is difficult to judge for yourself from appearance alone. A physician needs to check the pattern and course of your hair loss and your medical history through a medical interview and visual examination. At our clinic, we assess your condition at consultation, including the possibility of causes other than AGA or FAGA.
Q2. Can women use AGA medications such as finasteride?
No. Finasteride and dutasteride are treatments for AGA in men and are not indicated for women; pregnant women must also avoid contact with broken tablets. For women’s hair loss (FAGA), we combine a different set of treatments.
Q3. Is a blood test always required?
No, it is not carried out for everyone as a matter of routine. We perform a blood test when oral medication is being considered, or when the physician judges that another cause of hair loss or your general health needs to be checked.
Q4. Is this covered by insurance?
AGA and FAGA treatment are self-pay care; they are not covered by public health insurance, and the full cost is borne by the patient. Fees vary depending on the treatment, so we provide individual pricing information at your consultation.
Q5. Can I book without a referral?
Yes. AGA and FAGA treatment may be booked without a referral. If this is your first visit, please book through our enquiry form. A physician always carries out a consultation and confirms suitability before any treatment begins.
Q6. Can both men and women be seen at this clinic?
Yes. We see both men’s hair loss (AGA) and women’s hair loss (FAGA). Because the medications available differ between men and women, we confirm your condition at consultation before proposing a treatment.
Q7. How long does the first visit take?
The first visit includes a medical interview, examination of the scalp and hair, and an explanation of treatment, so the time required varies depending on what is involved. Please allow extra time, as a blood test may also be carried out.
Q8. Can I still consult you if I am being treated, or taking medication, elsewhere?
Yes, please feel free to consult us. Please bring something that shows the name of any medication you are currently taking (such as a medication notebook or the medication itself). The physician will check for interactions and review your treatment history before deciding on the appropriate treatment.
Q9. How do I get to the clinic from Omotesando Station?
It is a 5-minute walk from Exit A2 of Omotesando Station on the Tokyo Metro, at BASE Jingumae B1F, within easy reach of Harajuku, Meiji-jingumae and Shibuya. As we operate by appointment only, please book in advance.
